NURS 480 Ethics Policy Economics

Purpose of Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to increase student understanding of the role of the nurse leader to ensure safe patient care practices and guide nursing staff and staff of the healthcare team to improve patient, staff and family member safety within the clinical area.

Student Approach to Assignment: For this assignment, I used a collaborative approach that focused on a real-world issue of pressure injuries within a hospital setting. My approach was to show what I learned regarding the intricacies of effective nursing leadership in patient care management. Even though my direct involvement was minimal, I wanted to engage with the content by reflecting on the actions taken and considering how I would apply these in similar situations in my nursing practice. My approach was to integrate practical insights from this case into my nursing knowledge and enhance my understanding of nursing leadership and quality patient care.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: I included this assignment in my portfolio to highlight my practical experience, addressing patient safety concerns, and my ability to work effectively as part of the health care team. This assignment demonstrates my ability to apply evidence-based practice in real-world settings to improve patient care outcomes. This paper reflects the nurse's role in managing care and preventing complications, highlighting the importance of proactive management in nursing practice. It reflects my understanding of and engagement with core nursing competencies and shows my ability to learn from observation and apply theoretical knowledge.

Outcome 15:

Delegates and supervises the nursing care given by others while retaining accountability for the quality of care provided.

I demonstrated my ability to delegate and supervise nursing care effectively in this scenario to prevent pressure injuries. As a nurse leader, I helped identify a patient safety issue so that it could be addressed with the staff. I was then involved in delegating and overseeing the execution of these new procedures for my patients and ensuring that all team members were compliant, thereby maintaining patient quality of care.

Outcome 17:

Articulate the nurse's role as a member of the interprofessional team in promoting safety and preventing errors and near misses.

While dealing with this pressure injury issue during this clinical rotation, I showed the importance of a nurse's role on the team in keeping patients safe. Although I wasn't the one calling meetings, my active participation in the discussions and problem-solving process highlighted the collective effort needed to improve patient outcomes. We shared our observations and collaborated on developing strategies to prevent further incidents as a team. Our contributions helped foster a safer care environment by advocating for better practices and supporting the changes initiated by leadership. This experience displays the importance of teamwork in preventing errors and ensuring patient safety.

Outcome 32:

Adhere to the registered nurse scope and standard of practice.

As a nursing team member during the pressure injury incident, I aligned our actions with registered nurse scope and standard of practice by identifying risk factors that led to the patient's condition and collaborating on a multidisciplinary plan to prevent further occurrences by implementing evidence-based interventions.
